Many people joined us to honour and celebrate the beauty of the natural eelgrass habitat in Cowichan Bay!

Local artist Rod Carswell painted us a BEAUTIFUL eelgrass habitat mural, which he unveiled on Wednesday, April 14th on the Pier at the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre.

The weather is getting nicer and it's time to shape up our eelgrass mapping skills to hit the beach in spring/summer. Come out on Saturday, March 27th for a free workshop on protecting eelgrass using density mapping techniques.

 Eelgrass meadows represent one of the habitat types that are threatened by estuarine development.  Various types of disturbance in coastal and estuarine environments have led to a decline in seagrass abundance around the world.

The objectives of this project are to:

1. restore eelgrass habitat by transplanting harvested shoots

2. monitor transplant sites for change

3. engage, train and educate locals in eelgrass stewardship and

4. collaborate with local planners and government.
