Before You Head Outdoors

STRANDED WILDLIFE

Do not touch wildlife if it appears stranded.  It may look like it is abandoned (especially in certain times of the year) but some animals will leave their young for periods of up to 36 hours.  It is important that you do not touch them or move them, as this may cause more stress and even death.  For more information you can go to:

or call your local SPCA.

FROGS AND TADPOLES

If you go pond skimming, please note that it is illegal to catch frogs and tadpoles or remove them from the body of water in which you found them.  This means that you can catch them and look at them but you CAN NOT TAKE THEM HOME.  It is illegal to keep or transport them.

SAFETY

While you are outside it is a good opportunity to teach your children about basic safety.  Do they know what to do if they are by themselves and they get hurt?  Do they know what to do if they get lost?  Even though you will most likely be with them while they are out at this age, it is good to begin introduction to these types of concepts while they are young.

Good Things to Take When You Go Outdoors

  • Binoculars
  • Jars with lids (you can find these at most toy stores)
  • Small nets for catching bugs and fish
  • Guide Books

* You can generally find most of these things at children’s toy stores.  As well, you can get things like inexpensive real binoculars at places like Lee Valley Tools.  Information and guidebooks can be found online or in bookstores both new and used.  A list of books that may be helpful is included in the Resources section.  Also included is a list of websites that can be helpful or interesting when looking for things to do.
